THE THIRD LOVER BY CLAUDE CHABROL, 4K RESTORATION (1967)

04/10/2018

Filmed in black and white, THE THIRD LOVER is an often-overlooked film from the early career of Claude Chabrol, whose filmography counts over 60 films. Inspired by a random news item from New York in 1960 involving the writer Norman Mailer, the film was already beginning to showcase many of the director’s trademarks: a story of a couple, combining chronic bourgeoisie, comedy of manners, and thriller.

The 4K restoration was carried out by the Hiventy film laboratory using a 4K scan of the original negative under the supervision of STUDIOCANAL and with the support of the CNC (Centre National de la Cinématographie – National Centre for Cinematography). This restored version of THE THIRD LOVER had its public world premiere in the Venice Classics section at the 74th Venice International Film Festival held last September. The actress Stéphane Audran attended the screening and told viewers how delighted she was to see this much underappreciated film find a second wind as part of this prestigious festival.
