28.05.2019

STUDIOCANAL, Mai Juin Productions and Galatée Films announced today that Gilles de Maistre’s (MIA AND THE WHITE LION, FEROCIOUS) family adventure movie THE WOLF AND THE LION has commenced principal photography, shooting on location in Canada until June 2020. The film will shoot in 6 blocks as the production follows the growth of our animal heroes in the film.

THE WOLF AND THE LION will star newcomer Molly Kunz (WIDOWS) and Academy Award® nominee Graham Greene (WIND RIVER, DANCES WITH WOLVES) alongside animal castmates, who will be tended to on set by renowned animal trainer Andrew Simpson (GAME OF THRONES, THE REVENANT).

The film also sees Gilles reuniting with his team behind MIA AND THE WHITE LION: writer Prune de Maistre, producer Catherine Camborde of Mai Juin Productions, and producers Jacques Perrin, Nicolas Elghozi and Valentine Perrin of Galatée films. The film follows the runaway global success of MIA AND THE WHITE LION, the most successful French film internationally of 2018, which received the highest number of admissions outside of France totaling over 3.1 million. Since December 26th, 2018, the film has been released in 36 territories and has grossed over 31 million dollars at the worldwide box-office.

Alma, a head-strong music student from New York, flies to the magical remote island where she grew up in the forest in Canada, to attend the funeral of her Grandfather who raised her. Whilst there, she unexpectedly discovers a lost lion cub who had been destined for the Vancouver circus, before then rescuing an endangered female wolf who is being pursued by researchers. The wolf later turns up at Alma’s cabin and gives birth to a single cub, who immediately forms a bond which transcends species with the rescued lion cub. The wolf mother is captured soon after, by researchers Charles and Eli, who are hunting the perfect specimen of silver female wolf. Alma is left to tend to the wolf's cub, Mozart, alongside the rescued lion cub, Dreamer.

A powerful connection quickly develops between the three unlikely friends, but their world soon collapses as Mozart and Dreamer are captured and separated from each other. The two cub brothers must embark on a treacherous journey to be reunited once more and face the dangerous journey home together, with Alma herself forming an alliance with Eli, united to find their animals. THE WOLF AND THE LION is an incredible live-action, heart-warming tale of friendship, starring real wolves and lions in the roles of Mozart and Dreamer, as we follow Alma's emotional journey back to her roots throughout the Canadian vistas in all four seasons.

Didier Lupfer, CEO of STUDIOCANAL, remarked: ‘Following the incredible international success of the ambitious, family adventure film MIA AND THE WHITE LION we are very proud and excited to re-team with Gilles de Maistre and begin a new journey with THE WOLF AND THE LION.’

STUDIOCANAL will launch global sales at AFM later this year.

Molly Kunz is represented by Trademark Talent and Myman-Greenspan.
